The bajan superstar was named this year winner of the Peter J. Gomes Humanitarian Award for her philanthropic work over the last few years with her Clara Lionel Foundation. “So, I made it to Harvard,” Rihanna began her speech to loud applause from the audience. “Never thought I’d be able to say that in my life, but it feels good.”

“I’m incredibly humbled by this,” she continued. “To be acknowledged at this magnitude, for something that, in truth, I’ve never wanted credit for.” In her inspirational speech she revealed that she had always wanted to help people since her childhood. She told the audience “We’re all human. We all just want a chance, a chance at life, a chance at an education, a chance at a future, really.” At CLF [Clara Lionel Foundation], our mission is to impact as many lives as possible, but it starts with just one. Just one. As I stare out into this beautiful room, I see optimism, I see hope, I see the future. I know that each and every one of you has the opportunity to help someone else. All you need to do is help one person, expecting nothing in return. To me, that is a humanitarian.”

Rihanna launched her Clara Lionel Foundation in 2012 where she provides scholarships for students in the U.S. and across the Caribbean.

Lisa Hanna is calling for deejay Vibez Kartel's music to be banned from Jamaican airwaves.

Hanna, who is a former Miss World and now active politician has issues with Vybz Kartel music being played on the airwaves, despite being behind bars for a murder conviction. ”If you are convicted until you are not convicted perhaps it is your music needs not be played on the radio,” the Member of Parliament said.

Lisa Hanna not only wants radio stations to stop playing the deejays but also wants authorities to get to the bottom of why he is still releasing new music despite being in prison. She drew a contrast to Buju Banton who is currently incarcerated in the United States and has not release any new music since his incarceration. “I think we need to get to the root cause of that, we need to find out how the songs are being made, how they are getting out, is their corruption in the prison system,” she said. She has since received lots of backlash from other dancehall artists and fans of the genre, including some death threats that are currently being investigated.

Do you think the constant attacks on the genre of Dancehall by politicians will go on?

A surveillance camera mounted on the front of USA Grocery caught video of Thursday’s fatal confrontation that killed Kareem Mano.

The suspected killer, 20-year-old De’Andre Malik Thomas, turned himself in Friday afternoon, Bibb County Sheriff David Davis said.

The graphic video shows Mano running away before collapsing behind a white SUV near some gas pumps, still holding his gun.

At the time of the shooting, Thomas was free on a $65,000 bond pending a trial in connection with a robbery last year. Thomas and another man had been charged with armed robbery, false imprisonment and carrying weapons on school grounds in a stickup at student apartments on Mercer University’s campus.

John R.K. Howard, the man who pleaded guilty to assaulting a black, mentally disabled high school student with a coat hanger in an Idaho locker room walked out of court Friday with his sentence: no jail time.

In a lawsuit, Tim and Shelly McDaniel called Howard the leader of their son's tormentors — who they say photographed him naked at school, hurled racial slurs at him and made him recite song lyrics that celebrate black lynchings. The victim’s parents have a $10 million lawsuit open against the school over the October 2015 attack and events leading up to it.The victim’s parents and family have left the Idaho town since the 2015 attack and the victim now lives in an assisted-living facility after trying to kill himself multiple times.

Do you think that racial bias still plays a role in the courtrooms throughout America today?

During a political meeting at the Rusea’s High School in Lucea, Hanover, last weekend,Prime Minister of Jamaica Andrew Holness said that daggering in dancehall is not only unacceptable but is to blame for violence on the island. “The guys who are doing this daggering dance, they are creative, but, they need to understand that what they are projecting into the minds of our children is that violence is acceptable,” Holness said.

That statement is not sitting well with some dancehall fans and some entertainment personalities in Jamaica including the often outspoken DJ Rush who responded to Holness telling him to focus on fixing the economy and to leave dancehall alone. “Fix the lack of jobs, debt to GDP ratio, crime, the fact that police are quitting more than joining,” Rush said. “Fix the economy and stop trying blame music.”

Some dancehall fans on social media started weighing in calling the Ministers comments out of touch, while others defended him agreeing with the statements that dancehall is among the root causes of crime in Jamaica.

Do you think the Jamaican Prime Minister has a point or is it just an excuse for politicians not being able to do what they have promised?

Do you think this situation would have escalated if the minors involved were not of Latin descent?

Large groups of activists protested near the home of a police officer in Anaheim, California, Wednesday after a video surfaced online  allegedly showing the plainclothes cop firing a gun in front of a group of minors. Many chanted, “don’t shoot the kids,” and “arrest violent cops!”

Police have arrested two teenagers in connection with Tuesday afternoon’s confrontation. The footage shows a white man pulling a 13-year-old Latino boy by his collar as a group of minors watch, repeatedly asking the adult to let him go. Anaheim Police Department later identified the man as an off duty LA police officer, but did not release his name. The protests have turned violent over night and Police have made several arrests since.

Caribbean economies are projected to record minimal growth – an average of 1.7 per cent this year. But’s that not enough to generate jobs and drive desperately needed debt reduction, the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) has warned.

At the CDB’s annual news conference detailing the economic performance and outlook for its borrowing member countries, president Dr Warren Smith cautioned that growth rates were way too low and public debts were still spiraling out of control.

Do you think the government needs to do more to get the economic standings of the Caribbean under control?
